répétition des figures, à différentes échelles, semble accorder à la peinture

Uruguay il y avait des peintures rupestres, la plupart ont été détruites, mais quelques unes sont actuellement
conservées. Il y a eu ici une mégafaune et des montagnes enneigées et aussi des

In this way, Manifesta aims to create a keen and workable interface between prevailing international artistic and intellectual debates, paying attention to the specific qualities and idiosyncrasies of a given location.</span></div>

This process aims to establish closer dialogue between particular cultural and artistic situations and the broader, international fields of contemporary art, theory and politics in a changing society. Manifesta has a pan-European vocation and at each edition, it has successfully presented artists, curators, young professionals and trainees from as many as 40 different countries. With the expansion of the European community from 12 to 25 countries, and with the possible target of around 30 nations in the foreseeable future, Manifesta also realizes the importance of creating links with Europe’s neighbours in Asia, the eastern Mediterranean and northern Africa. <span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: x-small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #999999;">Hotel de Inmigrantes is an international project that will take place in different locations all over<br />the world. It relates to the real ‘Hotel de Inmigrantes’, a complex of buildings that was constructed between 1906 and 1911, in the port of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to receive and assist the many thousands of immigrants who, at that time, where arriving in Argentina from many parts of the world. This Inmigrants’ hotel fascinated me and has inspired me to reflect on the contemporary global migration, to think about cosmopolitanism and locality and finally about the personal identity of each individual. Individuals that are being manipulated by mass media, consumption and the shift of capital that forces human beings to follow, in search of a job.<br />With ‘Hotel de Inmigrantes’, we will realise a series of projects – exhibitions and meetings of artists - all over the world which will enable a confrontation between individuals of different origins in different local contexts. Each event will start with a meeting of international artist, (who will come to the venue as if they were actual immigrants) and will conclude with an exhibition. The artists will live together, share the space, share food and facilities, try to adopt to the local conditions, try to communicate and try to find a way to organize their new life by means of art.<br />The project is planned for 2012/2013 and will feature in New York, Hasselt, Singapore, Hannover, Bratislava, Montevideo, Fukushima and finally in Buenos Aires. At the same time, the project is a research trajectory towards the </span><a href="http://www.mediations.pl/" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #999999;">Me¬diations Biennale</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #999999;"> of P</span></span><span style="font-family: 'Arial Narrow'; font-size: x-small;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #999999;">oznan in 2014.<br />Each of these projects will form an autonomous event, with a specific subtitle, so various aspects of iden¬tity of the human being lost as a part of a global village can be researched. The artists can research different aspects of human migrations, identity and globalisation. Each meeting and exhibition will relate to a different aspect of being a stranger, homeless, identity-less, manipulated, a member of a global village, one who becomes an anonymous consumer and producer at the same time, one who repeats all the truly ‘truth’, a witness of a world created by the global media, technology and capital. And since the artists will come from all over the world, they will all have their own approach in referring to this over¬all theme.<br />The first project will take place in New York in March 2012 during the SCOPE Art Fair entitled ‘Nothing in Common’. There, ten Polish and Middle European artists will share a space of 100m2 during 10 days of the fair and will produce art works. The starting point is an object brought in a suitcase from home and found objects – objets trouvés - from New York.<br />As a second project, we would like to move the exhibition to Hasselt as a parallel event during MANIFESTA 9 that will be held in the city of Genk, namely in an abandoned postindustrial area,where the question about migration and global changes in our future society will be raised.<br />The ‘Hotel de inmigrantes’ project in Hasselt will be entitled ‘Cosmopolitan Stranger ‘and will be curated by myself; Tomasz Wendland, artist and the initiator of Hotel de Inmigrantes and by Koen Vanmechelen, the artist who will host this project at his studio in Hasselt. The subtitle of the project ‘Cosmopolitan Stranger’ relates to the art work of the latter. Vanmechelen is mostly known for his‘Cosmopolitan Chicken Project’. A project that researches the evolution and hybridisation of worldwide races of chickens as an example of human desire to create an ideal human being. With the title ‘Cosmopolitan Stranger’ we want to provocatively support and protect the value of local phenomena, attitudes, conventions, customs, practices, rituals and traditions. We want to defend art from the standardization, from so called global aesthetic and global objectiveness. We will occupy a 3000m2 building and share the space with 30 artists from all over the world and this with respect for the differences of each individual in attitude and origin.<br />The Cosmopolitan Stranger is a man who has lost his own identity as a result and product of a global ideology, a trend of aesthetic, a Zelig, like the one played by Woody Allen*, or „The Man Without Qualities” created by Robert Musil **. An immigrant and an artist is the one who confronted with a new environment must face questions concerning his own value and identity in confrontation with the strangers. A cosmopolitan man must appear to him as an alien, who has no roots, who is hard to be noticed, who is simply invisible.</span></span></div>

Sospecho que como la de muchos otros territorios, está plagada de contradicciones y nomenclaturas sin resolver o inciertamente ambiguas. Es así que no hemos resuelto hasta el día de hoy —al menos que yo sepa— si nuestro imponente «nombre» <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Uruguay</span> significa ‘río de los pájaros pintados’ o ‘río de los caracoles’.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);" class="MsoNormal"><span style="" lang="ES">Por otro lado, en 2011, conmemoramos nuestros doscientos años de luchas libertarias, donde emerge la figura —ora colosal, ora doméstica— de nuestro prócer en pensamiento y en acción: José Gervasio Artigas. Quien, lejos de tener un final de laureadas glorias en su tierra, se autoexilió, hasta su muerte, en el Paraguay.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);" class="MsoNormal"><span style="" lang="ES">En el florecimiento de estos últimos años de nuevos derechos, de reconsiderarnos como uruguayos y comenzar a olvidar que no debemos ocultar más nuestro color de piel, ni nuestro origen, ni nuestra identidad personal como jóvenes, como viejos, como intelectuales, como científicos, como hurgadores de basura, como padres de familia, como mujeres solas, como homosexuales, como negros, como mulatos… percibimos que no solo vivimos cien años de soledad, sino que nos sumergimos en doscientos años de extrañamiento constante. Reglas absolutas dan paso a nuevos conceptos de nuestra existencia. Podemos reconocer que teníamos ballenas, dinosaurios, pictogramas paleolíticos… Que un uruguayo inventaba el surrealismo y que con su volcánico desaforo de sangre y semen proponía un paraguas, una máquina de coser y una mesa de quirófano que soportarán a uno de los movimientos más poderosos del arte del siglo <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">xx</span>. Isidore Ducasse, Conde de Lautréamont, innegable jerarca de la historia, murió —como nuestro prócer— lejos de la tierra que lo vio nacer, en el anonimato más desgarrador. Y hoy descansa en un vergonzante osario común.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);" class="MsoNormal"><span style="" lang="ES">En esta extraña existencia, nuestra columna vertebral —el río Uruguay— es fluida y líquida y vertical. La seccionan conmociones y cemento armado. Las hurgaciones de Turell en la vida anterior o contemporánea al origen del <i>Homo Sapiens</i><span style="font-style: normal;"> en Uruguay nos refieren a la revalorización de una identidad poderosa, pura, pero también salvaje. Éramos ya </span><i>el Uruguay</i><span style="font-style: normal;">, región en un estado de no racionalidad, de invención, de formas animales ciclópeas y de orgullo patrimonial.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(153, 153, 153);" class="MsoNormal">Megaterios y gliptodontes, entre otros, son apenas algunas de las formas que sobreviven hoy en piedra o en hueso transformándose en piedra. La paleontología y el amor por el paisaje que ya no existe se unen en el arte de este artista joven, inquieto e intensamente curioso, que no deja de recordarnos que ya antes de la historia hubo otra, fascinante y convulsionada; Cuando de noche cruza el cielo, con su chistido.. la gente se persigna e inmediatamente piensa: "A quien viene a llevarse ahora la muerte?"... como verás es casi idéntico.. por lo que dices del "indio"... es como si la creencia proviniera de los nativos, originarios de América... No debemos olvidar que en este contexto los aborígenes conocían exactamente el lenguaje de los pàjaros... Ellos expresan mensajes que sólo ellos pueden decifrarlos... por ej. así como la muerte, anuncian: visitas, el cambio del clima, noticias, peligros, etc. Tampoco debemos olvidar que según algunos de sus mitos, alguna vez allá lejos y hace tiempo, todos "éramos hermanos", pero auténticos... ¿cuándo se produjo nuestra separación?... y nos olvidamos que compartimos una misma esencia que es la Vida?. Son pues aquellos lugares deshabitados o con escaso número de población, y se contraponen a las áreas permanentemente ocupadas o ecúmene .”</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY">Estamos invitados pues, a recorrer un territorio desconocido, inquietante, pero a su vez, que conforma<span style=""> </span>un espacio pleno de sentido, dividido en sectores claramente definidos. </span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY"> </span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY">El acceso se realiza a través del D.E.N.C. (Departamento del Estado Natural de la Cultura), institución unipersonal dirigida por el propio Alejandro Turell, que tiene como objetivo, “desarrollar proyectos que contribuyan a tender lazos entre el espectador, la cultura y la naturaleza; vinculando el arte y la ciencia de manera visceral” en palabras de su Director General.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY">En este caso, nos encontramos en la División Ornitología (especies migratorias) ubicada físicamente en el mismísimo Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, donde una puerta cerrada al público visitante separa y une a la vez ambas instituciones. Desde ese espacio con el acceso vetado que permitiría el acceso al D.E.N.C. -¿o al área educativa del MNAV?- y a través de su puerta en común nos llegan sonidos de la naturaleza.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY">Aves, más precisamente en este caso, cuya ubicación desconocemos y podemos situarlas tanto en los jardines del Museo -en plena naturaleza- como<span style=""> </span>en cautiverio dentro del Museo.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY">Si escuchamos con atención, el sonido está ordenado, editado digitalmente bajo patrones de repetición que nos sumerge en un paisaje sonoro originado en el registro de campo. </span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY"> </span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY">En dicha ambientación sonora, elaborada a través de la grabación del canto de diversas especies -algunos cantos familiares y otros, aunque cercanos geográficamente, realmente desconcertantes- nos encontramos con dos series de postales, apaisadas y verticales, representando diferentes ejemplos de aves. Se trata de obras del ornitólogo y pintor estadounidense John James Audubon cuyo método de captura y modelado consistía en dispararle a las aves sin dañarlas en demasía para</span><span style="">,</span><span lang="ES-UY"> una vez capturadas, y mediante alambres, mantenerlas en una posición lo más natural posible y as</span><span style="">í</span><span lang="ES-UY"> pinta</span><span style="">r</span><span lang="ES-UY">las con su hábitat de fondo. </span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY"> </span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY">Si estas imágenes basadas en la observación de la naturaleza son un producto cultural de su tiempo que ponía el énfasis en el registro fiel, Turell las dota de autonomía como imágenes interviniéndolas, pintándolas una por una, variando el color del plumaje más allá de sus características como especie,<span style=""> </span>modificando el entorno natural que las rodea, para ingresarlas definitivamente al terreno de la creación artística. La competencia de la ornitología en cuanto observación veraz de las especies- es puesta en cuestión dado el corrimiento hacia el campo de la estética en cada una de estas postales.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY"> </span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY">También en esta sección de la instalación de Alejandro Turell existe la posibilidad de llenar un formulario diseñado por el D.E.N.C. donde se nos invita a categorizar las obras de artistas nacionales que conforman el acervo del Museo con la finalidad de incorporarlas a la muestra mediante una encuesta de 200 personas. Una vez más, estrategias de una institución dentro de otra que estimulan reflexiones varias sobre una colección y sus diferentes usos pensando en la relación, no siempre apacible, entre los artistas, su obra y la institución museo. Que indudablemente nos remiten a proyectos fundacionales dentro de la corriente artística de la Crítica Institucional como podría ser el<span style=""> </span>“Departamento de las Águilas, Museo de Arte Moderno” de Marcel Broodthaers, a fines de los años sesenta, que circuló en forma itinerante por diversos espacios de arte y museos en el mundo entero.</span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY"> </span></p> <p style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102);" class="MsoNormal"><span lang="ES-UY">Continuando el recorrido, nos topamos con una cámara de maravillas (<i>wunderkammer</i></span><span lang="ES-UY">) miniaturizada con exhibidores propios de un museo de historia natural con intrigantes objetos en reducida escala que nos remite al coleccionismo moderno. El primer Museo Nacional en nuestro país -llamado también<span style=""> </span>Museo o Gabinete de Historia Natural- tiene origen en el año 1838 y es en un reglamento de 1875 donde aparecen las seis secciones que lo dividían: Historia Nacional, Numismática, Bellas Artes -que comprendía esculturas, pinturas, dibujos, grabados y antigüedades-, Productos de las Ciencias, inventos; Objetos históricos y Galería histórica del país.
